Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between chip tuning by reprogramming and chip tuning with an additional module (a so-called "tuning box")?

With reprogramming, the standard control program of the engine electronics is replaced by a modified, tuning program. In most cases, with the latest technology, our modification is 100% reversible and undetectable with a diagnostic tester. When reprogramming we modify the engine operating parameters, the amount of fuel and the maximum permitted turbo pressure.

An additional module or tuning box is a separate control unit installed between the engine control unit and the fuel injection system. The module receives the control signals, processes them digitally and sends them on to the engine in modified form. Installation is extremely simple, and it can also be moved to another vehicle. Installation leaves no consequences and is 100% reversible. The module does not raise the maximum turbo pressure; in most cases it changes the injection timing and fuel quantity signal directly at the injectors.

What is chip tuning?

Chip tuning is a modification of the computer signals that the electronic control unit sends to the engine. These signals are optimised, which gives better use and performance of the engine. This kind of tuning is only possible on newer engines that use electronic injection control (older ones had mechanical control). All turbo diesel engines come into consideration: JTD, HDI, TDCI, DITD, D, CDI, DCI, TDCI, TDI, I-CTDI, DID, D4D ... as well as petrol "injection" engines.

As a rule, the vehicle manufacturer produces more powerful engines for its vehicles and installs them as needed. This allows larger production series for models with different nominal power outputs (e.g. the VW 1.9 TDI PD model with 101/150 PS), but basically they all have the same engine. This reserve exists so that the engine can meet economic (insurance), environmental, climatic and other requirements. It must also meet the most diverse requirements of drivers and driving styles.

How long does chip tuning by reprogramming take?

Depending on the type of vehicle, normally about 2 hours. Tuning certain vehicles can easily take several hours - you will usually be warned about this.

How is the additional RAPID module installed?

The products we offer are developed so that they are simple for the user to install and use. This means that the installation itself is very simple for anyone, with practical illustrated instructions and text in Italian, English and, in the near future, Croatian. Everything is done without soldering or mechanical modifications. The only thing you have to find is the right connectors (with the help of a photograph this is not a problem) and connect the module to the original connectors. If you have any problem during installation, we are available by e-mail or mobile phone.

Does chip tuning affect engine life?

The products we offer are developed so that they never touch the upper limits of the durability of the engine and other components (gearbox, clutch ...). As a rule our tuning does not affect engine life, but that life in any case depends on the driving style and maintenance of either a standard or a tuned vehicle. It is advisable not to take a cold engine to high revs until it reaches operating temperature (the same applies to standard vehicles). This usually takes 5 to 10 minutes from starting a cold engine. It is also advisable that after sporty driving you do not switch the engine off immediately but let it idle for at least 1 minute. Observe the regular oil change and service intervals. Use the PROLONG oil additive, which reduces friction and wear of materials.

Can the increase in power be felt?

The increase in power is effective right after installation. A strong increase in torque of 20% to 30% leads to better vehicle dynamics at low revs. On average you have about one to two seconds better acceleration compared to the standard vehicle. On some newer vehicles, about 100 km have to be driven after the modification for the full effect of the tuning, so that the engine electronics can adapt itself optimally. Such vehicles cannot show a real result on the measuring rollers, so it is recommended not to measure the power immediately after the modification.

Are the service intervals shortened because of tuning?

The service intervals remain the same as for the standard vehicle. It is advisable to use a better synthetic oil or to add the PROLONG additive to the replaced oil.

Do the data in the vehicle documents have to be changed because of the increase in power?

In principle every change to the vehicle has to be registered (for example aluminium wheels, wider tyres, a sports steering wheel, etc.). For all Rapid modules we issue a TUV certificate for an extra charge, and some of our products are developed for use on race tracks and cannot be homologated for road use.

Does the top speed increase?

In principle it increases by 5 to 15 km/h, as a consequence of the higher torque. Otherwise the top speed is limited by the gear ratios in the gearbox or by an electronic limiter. An electronic speed limiter (if present) can easily be raised or removed at the client's wish.

What about the manufacturer's factory warranty?

Normally every modification of the vehicle's engine electronics results in loss of the warranty. The modifications we make are in most cases not visible to the service tester. The warranty rules are therefore not a problem, but if you wish, before you go to the service centre we can restore your standard program in the vehicle (all original programs are stored in an archive by chassis number). We have cooperated with some car dealers in Croatia for many years and with them the warranty is not lost for modifications made in our professional workshop.

How does tuning work with an automatic gearbox?

The automatic adapts itself to the new parameters, but for models with a sensitive gearbox we make smaller modifications with less powerful performance.

What about fuel consumption?

With the same driving style, consumption decreases by approximately 0.5 litres. Because of the higher torque and the sudden pressure increase, especially in the mid rev range, the engine runs more smoothly and needs less fuel, which is where the saving comes from. When driving in the high rev range, where the engine reaches higher power, consumption goes up by about 0.5 litres. In communication with our clients it has turned out that it increases only slightly, but with better vehicle performance.

We can confirm that after tuning the consumption stays the same or does not increase!
